terrazzo [ter-RAHT-tsaw] n. a concrete pavement originally used as an inexpensive alternative to marble for floors in Venetia, made with cement inlaid with chips of marble usually no larger than an inch-and-a-half in diameter, pounded down, rubbed, and polished to a smooth, shiny finish.
