Joliet limestone [joh-lee-ET LAHYM-stohn] n. the predominant rock found in northern
Illinois quarried in the vicinity of the cities of Joliet and Lemont; a dolomite stone similar to limestone that is buff when quarried but becomes more yellowed or ochre-colored as it ages. Also called Joilet or Athens "marble" although unlike marble it is not a metamorphosed limestone.
