In the Studio: Precision Cutting

[In the Studio, May 28, 2011 /Image & Artwork: designslinger]

Right from the very beginning I knew what I wanted my prints to look like, even before
having any idea how I was going to get there. I also knew that I wanted my carved lines to be as clean as possible, and I figured it would take some time to get my carving skills up to snuff. So I very methodically thought through what I was going to carve before putting knife to surface, and tried to pick the correct blade(s) to get the job done as neatly as possible. And because of the drawing I'd created, some of those cuts were teeny tiny ones to boot. Things looked pretty good on the surface, but no matter how well you think you've done, you don't really know until that first test print.

The concentrated effort paid off. Even when magnified under the powerful eye of the   camera's macro lens, the result was what I was hoping for.

Then it was time to clean up a bird's nest worth of lino shavings.

What? You're not going to show the whole print? That's just not fair. ;-)

Gotta keep 'em guessing through the summer, before all is revealed in September!
