Adamesque [AD-uhm-esk] n. a term implying a derivation from the Adam Style, based on the work of 18th century British architect Robert Adam, a style characterized by clarity of form, elegance and lightness, and subtle detailing; often employed design motifs include fan ornaments, festoons, and small round or oval ornaments decorated with leaves, petals and the like. So influential in the colonies and largely the basis for the Federal Style, that some architectural historians in America use the two terms more or less interchangeably.
