In the Studio: Ready, Set, Go!

[In the Studio, March 5, 2011 /Image & Artwork: designslinger_studio]

So where to begin? After taking that class over a year ago, I wanted to keep going and I signed-up for another class. I'd spent the previous ten weeks in an introductory survey class learning a variety of printmaking techniques, and this new one focused solely on relief block printing. It got canceled because of low enrollment, and my search for another class over the next several months turned out to be a bust.

I had to make a decision, give it up or plow ahead and teach myself how to produce
the artwork I knew I wanted to create. I was lucky, or cursed, because I could clearly see the image in my minds eye, already finished: architecture reduced down into its simplest forms but still recognizable, with a minimum of color.

I kept looking for a class to take to help me through the ins and outs of carving blocks and
shortcuts in multi-block color printing, tips on inks and printing techniques. But as the search became more and more frustrating and disheartening I had a decision to make - give it up, or just do it on my own. I decided to jump in with both feet and get started. I checked out a bunch of books from the Chicago Public Library on block printing technique as well as the history of Chinese and Japanese relief print work, and began some serious self-education.
