In the Studio: Just Beginning

[In the Studio, February 26, 2011 /Image & Artwork: designslinger_studio]

Just over a year ago I took a printmaking survey class, a 10 week studio course that took you, the student, through the very basics of intaglio, lithography, silkscreen and relief printmaking. Linoleum block relief prints and I clicked.

I wanted to learn more about printing with linoleum and searched in vain for months trying to find a class that taught the ins and outs of block printing. The search was a bust. There were all kinds of classes for silkscreeners and lithographers, but nothing worthwhile for a student looking to learn more about relief technique. So that was that.

But I couldn't let it go. So I decided to take the little bit I learned in that survey
class and go from there, exploring and learning on my own.

And that's where In the Studio comes in. Every Saturday I'll post about my journey
as I explore this art form that is challenging me to see and think about the visual world in a new and exciting way.

Yikes! Another very early morning - or very late night. When we put-up pics in a few months, hopefully you'll be viewing them at a more reasonable hour.

I would like to see what you did in the preliminary class, or an example of what attracts you to linoleum above other print processes.

You'll find some of the stuff that came out of the class in our December 22, 2009 post: Producing Prints. Like linoleum because of the clean lines and the smooth surface you get from it. It's the best material right now for the images I want to produce, and the process is ideal for the space we're working in right now. Hope to expand into other mediums, with a different work space, in the future.

Your welcome! Never could have guessed that I'd have found a new creative outlet doing something like this. It's kinda exciting!
