Daily Deco

I know it may be hard for some of you to believe, but there once was a time in this country
when newspapers were big business. Most large cities had several daily papers, and some were so dominant in their market that they built big, impressive buildings to show-off their stature. Such was once the case for Chicago's Daily News.
When Holabird and Root designed the Daily News Building in the late 1920s, the paper was
a Chicago powerhouse. Art Deco was all the rage, and the architects designed some exquisite Deco details to give the building its signature look.
No detail was too mundane for the designers of this behemoth of a building. These
spectacular pieces of art are the radiator covers in the building's entryways.
And this is an ordinary stairwell made extraordinary. The building no longer houses the
offices of the Daily News, they vacated years ago, prior to folding their tent and closing-up shop in 1978. The current owners are undertaking an extensive renovation and restoration of the major public areas. Can't wait to see it shine.
