Chicago in 2016

Guess we can throw all those Chicago 2016 banners and assorted paraphernalia into the
dumpster. The Olympics are going to Rio.

Bringing the Olympic Games to Chicago was not without controversy and the concept

was not supported by all of the city's citizens. There were a lot of folks out there who didn't want to see some of the city's parks destroyed to house Olympic-sized venues. This grassy area in the Frederick Law Olmsted designed Washington Park, would have been the location of the Olympic Stadium. When I went to take this picture, I noticed a long, white, arc-shaped line spray painted in the grass. I think it was the outline of the stadium's exterior wall. Since there will be no stadium, I suppose this will now remain a large open field, which should make the geese happy.

The most contentious issue was the proposed demolition of several buildings at the
site of the former Michael Reese Hospital Complex. Designed under the watchful eye of Walter Gropius, the city planned on tearing down the buildings and replacing them with the new towers of the Olympic Village.

Now that there will be no Olympics in 2016, the big question is: what happens to these

structures? The city has already destroyed the gardens, without the Games, are the buildings next?
