Father's Day

I mentioned at the end of Friday's Snippets post that today is the day we commemorate
Dad in many countries around the world.

I think that it is a very noble gesture to set aside a day to remind everyone to honor
their male parent, and I imagine the first few years of Father's Day celebrations were rather low key and included home made cards and gifts, and maybe a cake.

There was a time when Father's Day meant that the shirt and tie industry made their

entire years profit in the month of June. Ties were very much a part of men's fashion years ago, as were suits and hats. So, Father's Day was a boon for the manufacturers who made these clothing items, and the stores that sold them. Ties were synonymous with Father's Day for years.

In the 70s, there was a push by the furniture industry to pay way more than the price

of a tie, for a recliner for Dad. They weren't cheap - and they were big and ugly, so Mom had to rearrange her interior decor to accommodate the unsightly clunker. But, millions of homes had them.

Most men don't wear ties anymore. I guess kids can still buy their father a shirt he can

use, and a home made card is still a very personal expression of how much you care, but maybe Dad would really like WiiGolf this year. My father has seen so many Father's Days, that all he wants is to sit in front of the TV and watch a ballgame. In his recliner.
