Adios Los Angeles
The end of our Los Angeles journey has arrived. Movers are due to come today and
we'll hit the road tomorrow. This life change still seems surreal and perhaps we'll feel a little more settled once we're in our new apartment in Chicago, and start work on our new careers.
Living in Los Angeles has been, well, interesting. I never thought I'd live here, and I'm
not sorry to leave. We have made wonderful friends, and I will miss them dearly, but other than those relationships, there isn't much about this town that I will be pining for. I miss the old-fashioned big city atmosphere of a place like Chicago and New York, the hustle and bustle, and more than anything, the architecture.
Los Angeles does have some great architecture contrary to popular belief, and it does
have a history. But, the built environment here is so different than the cityscape I love. I can't wait to start walking the streets of Chicago and take in all the wonders it has to offer. If I ever see another stucco surface, it will be one more stucco surface too many. And, I can't wait to walk and not feel like I'm the only person using a sidewalk.
We love to walk, and whenever we've told people that we've walked a few miles from our
home to some destination, they've responded with utter disbelief. For me, the best way to know a city is to hike it. The car culture here is not an exaggeration or a myth. You have to drive everywhere, and although there is an extensive public transit bus system, it just adds to the already packed streets. The subway is in its formative stages and hopefully, someday, it will provide relief from the grid-locked city. But, I'm not sure if LA will ever become a walkable city.
The arrows are directing us out-of-town. We're very excited about our next adventure
and we'll be posting pics on our Twitter page as we drive across the country. So, you can travel with us by clicking on the Twitter feed at the top of the sidebar. We hope to get back to our regular daily posting rhythm sometime next week.
Los Angeles has not been a terrible place to live, and you may think we're crazy leaving
this climate for the winters of the Midwest. But, weather isn't everything. And we have to keep our creative juices flowing, so for now, Chicago will provide the material.
So long, farewell, adiós and goodbye, City of Angels.

Have a safe trip. I look forward to lots of new posts from Chicago.

Okay, well today's post just makes me sad. I'll miss you two so much. Have a great trip to your new home! Don't forget all us drivers in LA... we may not walk all that much, but we sure had fun when we walked with you!

Best of luck with the move. Chicago is one of my favorite cities for architecture and I'm looking forward to seeing your take on the new digs!
Funny, your L.A. eulogy coincided nicely with the #150 over at &7. It was my first time in L.A. and I shared some of the same feelings. Just think, we might've crossed over on the freeway...
