You gotta love the French. A sculpture by London artist, Paul Fryer titled Pieta, is not
your usual Jesus laying in Mary's arms, instead Fryer placed his Jesus in an electric chair. The piece is on display in a cathedral in the French town of Gap. [Culture Monster]
In more Michelangelo related news, the Italian state has purchased a small crucifix
attributed to the Renaissance master. But, not so fast say scholars. The government thought they got quite a deal at $4.2 million, but perhaps they got less than they bargained for. [NY Times]
The most important design fair in the world, the Salone del Mobile, is underway in Milan.

LA County's Big 3 cultural institutions have come out of the hunt for government money
with a small increase over last years allotment. The situation isn't as good for the library system or smaller arts institutions funded primarily by the city, which will see cuts. [LA Times]
The economic doldrums have hit the Russian art market. Sotheby's auction sales didn't
meet estimates by $4 million, and 35 percent of the lots didn't sell. Moscow's billionaire list has shrunk from 110 mega-rich Russians a year ago, to 32 today. [Bloomberg]
In happier news, over in Australia, the government is discussing the possibility of
making arts curriculum mandatory in grades K-12. [The Australian]
In 1967, Norval White and Elliot Willensky created the first AIA Guide to New York City.
Now, at age 82, Mr. White is at work on edition number five, and is back in the city for a whirlwind update tour. White and his wife fulfilled a life-long dream and moved to southern France 5 years ago. You're never too old for a life changing adventure. [NY Times]
