What with the success of Slumdog Millionaire, Indian tech-billionaire Nandan Nilekani

making the talk show circuit rounds pushing his book, Imagining India, and the worldwide attention given to Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week which ended on Saturday, can it be long before Indian inspired fashion comes to a store near you?

Top designers from the sub-Asian continent such as Manish Arora, Namrata Joshipura,

Rohit Bal, Rathore Jodhpur, Tarun Tahiliani and Ashima & Leena Singh are reinterpreting their cultural heritage with spectacular results. They are getting more and more notice from the international set, and before you know you know it, we will see one of them joining the ranks of Issac Mizrahi at Target.

I for one would be happy to see traditional Indian mens clothing permeate Western

design. For years I've looked longingly at photo's of Indian men appearing so comfotable wearing those long jackets and shirts (sherwanis, shalwar kameez & kurtas
) with loose fitting pants (paijamas). I realize they may be a little chilly during hard winters in New York, but for Spring, Summer and Fall, how delightful it would be to feel as light and airy as the seasons. If Indian fashion does make it into our clothes culture however, I just hope we don't end up with a repeat of the Nehru jacket era.
