Barbie Turns 50

She made her debut March 9, 1959 in New York City.

She was a fashion icon.
Little girls, and sometimes boys, learned about dressing up from her, with her stylish wardrobe and accessories.

She spawned an empire.
Mattel, clothing lines, magazines, books, interior design, cars, travel kits, beauty pageants, a huge collectibles market, her own camp culture, a world-wide fan base - even museum exhibits.

She changed her look with the times.

From the classic, to the contemporary, she tried her best to keep up with her fickle public.

She has been worshiped and despised, vilified and adored.

There will never be another like her - Bratz or no Bratz.

She is now old enough to be a grandmother.

But she remains timeless, in a Joan Rivers kind of way.

She is turning 50.

So, join Madonna and Michael Jackson, and just keep on keeping on.

Happy Birthday, Barbie.
