Chicago in 2016?

The Chicago Olympic Committee, or is it just called Chicago 2016? Anyway, they had a big

presentation on Friday and made public their Candidature File, or bid book, (here's a link) which they've submitted to the International Olympic Committee. There are three other cities in the running: Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo.

I read somewhere that the word on the street is that the choice is really between Chicago

and Rio. I know the IOC has to make a decision based on who they think can afford the hefty price tag, and insure that the Committee gets their cash, but there is also the political dynamic. Is it more prudent and politically correct to give the games to a city in South America, since the continent is moving up on the world's Monopoly game board? But, if the President were to make a personal pitch to the Committee members and ask them to bring the games to his hometown, that could be the ace up Chicago's sleeve.

I have never been to Rio but my husband has, and he thinks Chicago is the better choice.
I vote for Chicago because it is so beautiful and has such amazing architecture that is just sitting there waiting for this event. Plus, no slight to Rio, Chicago IS the City that Works after all. But, the plan doesn't include any new transportation component, and I thought the IOC had already expressed some concern over the city's existing transit system. Plus, the Olympic Village doesn't come up to the architectural standards Chicago sets for itself. I guess the cluster of buildings shown in the concept illustration can change though, since the design isn't set in stone - yet.

If I were a betting person (and I'm not really, I don't have the instinct for it) I'd take

Chicago. The BBC gives the 4 cities the following odds: Chicago 11/10; Madrid 15/2; Rio 5/2; Tokyo 3/1. So, before I place my bet, isn't 3 to 1 better than 11 to 10? Or have I got it all backwards? Help!

    Hey Guys,

11/10 means that Chicago is favored over 3/1 Tokyo. Here's how wiki explains it.

"Favoured by bookmakers in the United Kingdom and Ireland, fractional odds quote the net total that will be paid out to the bettor, should he win, relative to his stake. Odds of 4/1 ("four-to-one" or less commonly "four-to-one against") would imply that the bettor stands to make a £400 profit on a £100 stake. If the odds are 1/4 (read "one-to-four", or "four-to-one on"), the bettor will make £25 on a £100 stake. Should he win, the bettor always receives his original stake back, so if the odds are 4/1 you would actually receive a total of £500 in return (£400 plus the original £100). Odds of 1/1 are known as evens or even money. Unusually, odds of 10/3 is read as "one-hundred-to-thirty"."

I follow your blog every day.

    Cheers,
