A Piercingly Interesting Day

We had lunch yesterday with an acquaintance who told us she wanted to get together
because she had a New Year's surprise in store. As soon as we saw her, the surprise was right there on her face - a silver loop piercing her lip. In her excitement over her newfound fashion accessory she wanted my opinion, from a designer's standpoint, about the overall look. I told her it looked fine. What else was I going to say? But, she had a point, if you're going to get your face pierced, think about placement, balance and proportion.

A small rod through the eyebrow may seem innocent enough, but in the wrong place, or if
the jewelry is the wrong size, it can make you look lopsided. Of course, there are the piercings that have the surprise/reveal component, such as the tongue or upper inner lip, but even then, you have aesthetic considerations to take into account. Good design is good design, whether its decorating your face, or your living space. Whatever you choose to do, consider the shape of your face, your bone structure, hairline, prominence of your eyebrows, lip size and shape, and how many piercings you may ultimately end up with. And, if you're going to ask your designer friend for input; do it before - not after.
